This amazing track by Alex Winston sounds like it could have come out on any of the many Motown-influenced labels back in the day. She captures the the aptly titled "Choice Notes" with a hint of Kate Bush layered in for good measure. If she sounds this good in the shrubbery wait til you hear the studio version.
The opening progression of "Locomotive" raises its flag in similarly anthemic territory to the likes of Florence and the Machine, but Alex Winston's pop song feels a little more homespun. Chugging drums and multi-layered acoustic guitars hiss and wheeze and give the track both a rolling sense of forward motion and depth. Against this momentum, Winston pits her dizzying voice. A classically trained opera singer, she also covers a range of quirkiness and a feverish delivery that lends urgency even in the moments when lyrics become foggy.
